FCT Area Council Workers and Teachers Held Protest in Abuja
Striking local government employees and primary school teachers from the six area councils of Nigeria's Federal Capital Territory demonstrated in the capital last year to press demands over minimum wage implementation.
Area council workers and primary school teachers in Nigeria's Federal Capital Territory staged a peaceful protest in Abuja in April 2025. The demonstrators sought resolution of a dispute over the implementation of the national minimum wage.
The action involved staff from all six area councils of the FCT. Participants marched under the banner of a joint platform formed by the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees and the Nigeria Union of Teachers.
The protest occurred amid ongoing strikes by the two unions. Officials from the area councils had failed to reach agreement with the unions on how the revised minimum wage would be paid at local government level.
The Federal Capital Territory occupies a special position in Nigeria's administrative structure. Unlike the 36 states, it is administered directly by the federal government, yet its six area councils function as the equivalent of local government areas elsewhere in the country.

Disputes over minimum wage payments have been common across Nigeria since the national minimum wage was increased. Implementation has proved especially complicated at local government level, where many councils struggle to meet higher payroll costs without additional federal transfers.
The joint unions had warned that failure to resolve the matter would lead to sustained industrial action. The demonstration in Abuja formed part of efforts to draw attention from federal authorities who oversee the FCT.
According to Daily Trust, the protest was intended to remain peaceful. No reports of violence or major disruption emerged from the event.
The minimum wage question continues to affect public sector workers in many parts of Nigeria. Teachers and local government staff often represent the largest single payroll cost for area councils and state governments alike.

حذرت النقابات المشتركة من أن عدم حل المسألة سيؤدي إلى إجراءات صناعية مستمرة. شكل الاحتجاج في أبوجا جزءاً من الجهود لجذب انتباه السلطات الاتحادية التي تشرف على إقليم العاصمة الاتحادية.
وفقاً لصحيفة ديلي تراست، كان من المقرر أن يظل الاحتجاج سلمياً. لم ترد تقارير عن عنف أو اضطراب كبير ناتج عن الحدث.
