Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, is set to be granted Lebanese citizenship.

The 55-year-old, who holds Swiss and Italian nationality, is married to Leena al-Ashqar, a Lebanese national who previously worked for the Lebanese Football Association, according to Vanguard Nigeria.

Lebanon, a Mediterranean country of roughly six million people that has faced prolonged political and economic instability, maintains ties with prominent figures in international sport and culture through its extensive diaspora and citizenship policies.

The move comes as Infantino continues to lead FIFA, the global body governing football that has expanded tournaments and sought greater influence in regions including the Middle East.

Lebanese citizenship is sometimes extended to individuals with strong personal or professional connections to the country. Infantino's marriage provides such a link.

No further details on the timing or process of granting the citizenship have been made public by Lebanese authorities.

The development highlights the intersection between international sports leadership and national identity in a region where football retains significant popular interest despite infrastructure and governance challenges.
