Flash floods in Kenya have killed at least 81 and displace thousands

Kenya has experienced significant rainfall and flash floods resulting in at least 81 fatalities this month. The persistent heavy rain has severely affected Kisumu County, leading to the submergence of entire villages and the destruction of approximately 1,200 hectares of farmland.

The Nyakach area is among the worst affected, with over 3,000 families displaced due to the overflow of the Sondu Miriu River. Local authorities have reported substantial farmland loss and crop destruction. Evacuation efforts have relocated residents to more than eight centers.

Displaced individuals are facing significant challenges. Many have reported no available shelters, with widespread flooding impacting all residential areas. Families, including children, remain stranded as water levels continue to rise.

The capital city, Nairobi, has reported a death toll of 37, with extensive damage to homes and infrastructure. Additional incidents include fatalities in Kiambu and landslides in Kasaka.

Official Warnings and Climate Concerns

Authorities have issued warnings for extreme caution as weather forecasts predict continued rainfall. Climate scientists have noted that climate change is contributing to the intensification of extreme weather patterns, affecting regions in East Africa with increased frequency of severe floods and droughts.
