Former South African president Jacob Zuma returned to court on Thursday, alongside French arms manuf

Former President Zuma is facing 18 charges, including corruption, fraud, and money laundering, in connection with allegations of receiving over 700 illegal payments related to a 1999 arms deal. He denies all accusations and describes the case as politically motivated.

The corruption trial has been ongoing for nearly two decades, with frequent delays caused by appeals and legal challenges from both Zuma and Thales. Prosecutors have informed Judge Nkosinathi Chili that these actions have resulted in an 18-year delay, with all previous attempts to block the trial having been dismissed.

Zuma's legal team continues to challenge the impartiality of lead prosecutor Billy Downer and argues that the deaths of two key Thales executives have compromised their defense.

In addition to this case, Zuma was imprisoned in 2021 for contempt of court after refusing to testify before the Zondo Commission but was later granted early release. He is also appealing a ruling that requires him to repay $1.6 million in state-funded legal fees from his corruption defense, asserting that he is not liable.

The court is set to determine whether Zuma and Thales can continue with their appeals or if they must proceed to trial.
