Recently, a group of nine French composers specializing in rap, pop, and urban music collaborated with Afrobeats artists in Nigeria to create 60 tracks aimed at international markets. This collaboration took place at Mavin Records in Lagos, a prominent hub for economic and cultural activities.
Mavin Records is known for producing Afrobeats stars such as Rema, Ladipoe, Ayra Starr, and Magixx. The initiative was organized by Sacem, the Society of Authors, Composers and Music Publishers, in conjunction with the French embassy.
Afrobeats, a genre blending traditional African rhythms with contemporary pop sounds, has gained global popularity, significantly influenced by the Nigerian diaspora. Originating in the 1970s through Fela Kuti, Afrobeats continues to captivate a worldwide audience.
During the camp, artists from Nigeria and France worked in themed groups. French producer PSK, alongside Nigerian producer Dunnie Alexandra Lawal, collaborated on several tracks. The process allowed for a deep exploration of musical ideas, resulting in compositions that are both mellow and rhythmic.
