Suspension of Social Media Platforms in Gabon

The High Authority for Communication (HAC) in Gabon has announced the suspension of access to several social media platforms, including Instagram and YouTube. The decision, made public on Tuesday, is attributed to concerns over content that allegedly fuels conflict and division within the country.

According to connectivity monitor NetBlocks, multiple online platforms, including Facebook, TikTok, and WhatsApp, have been restricted in Gabon. The HAC spokesman, Jean-Claude Mendome, cited "inappropriate, defamatory, hateful, and insulting content" as reasons for the suspension, claiming it undermines human dignity, public morality, and national security.

Despite the suspension, the HAC emphasizes that freedom of expression remains a fundamental right in Gabon. However, opposition figures, including former Prime Minister Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze, have criticized the move as unconstitutional and detrimental to economic activities. Bilie-By-Nze stated that many businesses rely on social media as a vital tool for operations, and the decision negatively impacts their functionality.

Various businesses, ranging from restaurants to content creators, have expressed concerns over the adverse effects on their operations. Gabonese content creator Mister Wils, who has a significant following on TikTok, highlighted the challenges the ban poses to fulfilling contractual obligations with international partners.

Context of Social and Political Climate

This development occurs amid social unrest in Gabon, with ongoing strikes by teachers and potential industrial actions by other civil servants. President Brice Oligui Nguema, who assumed office following a coup, had pledged reforms after his election victory in April of the previous year.
