Gaza: Hamas expands search for hostages' bodies with help from Egypt

Hamas has intensified efforts to retrieve the bodies of hostages in the Gaza Strip. This development follows Egypt's deployment of a team equipped with heavy machinery to assist in the recovery process.

As part of the US-brokered ceasefire effective from Tue, Oct 10, 2023, Hamas is tasked with returning the remains of all Israeli hostages expeditiously. In reciprocal actions, Israel has agreed to return 15 Palestinian bodies for each Israeli body recovered.

To date, Hamas has returned the remains of 15 hostages. Israel has responded by returning 195 Palestinian bodies, with many not yet identified. No further exchanges have occurred in the past five days.

These include the disarmament of Hamas and addressing the governance of Gaza, a region currently facing severe famine conditions. The United States has emphasized the importance of continued progress, with President Donald Trump indicating close monitoring of the situation to ensure the timely return of additional bodies.

Hamas has cited significant obstacles due to extensive destruction within the region. The Egyptian team, which entered Gaza with equipment such as excavators and bulldozers, is part of broader mediation efforts to support the ceasefire agreement.
