Ghana Seeks Extradition of Russian National for Alleged Cybercrime

The government of Ghana has announced plans to seek the extradition of a Russian national accused of filming intimate encounters with women and posting the footage online without their consent. The individual reportedly used concealed equipment to record these interactions.

Legal Proceedings and International Cooperation

Technology Minister Sam George has engaged with Russia's ambassador to Accra regarding this matter, citing a potential breach of Ghana's cybercrime laws. Although the suspect is believed to have left Ghana, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection emphasizes the seriousness of the allegations and the government's commitment to pursuing justice.

Ghana intends to formally request cooperation from Russia and collaborate with Interpol to locate the suspect. Authorities are prepared to utilize all legal channels to ensure the individual faces charges in Ghana.

While Russia rarely extradites its citizens, Ghanaian officials plan to proceed with a formal request. Should the suspect refuse to return, the case may continue in absentia under Ghanaian law. Reports suggest the individual may be linked to similar allegations in Kenya.

Under Ghana's Cybersecurity Act 2020, the unauthorized publication of intimate images carries penalties, including imprisonment of up to 25 years. Recent efforts by Ghanaian authorities to address online abuse have led to an increase in arrests related to sexual extortion and the non-consensual sharing of explicit content.

In a notable 2022 case, a phone technician was sentenced to 14 years in prison for distributing intimate material without consent. The government's reinforced enforcement under the Cybersecurity Act aims to protect victims from exploitation and online harassment.
