Rescue Operation off the Coast of Gavdos
On Fri, a major rescue operation was conducted by Greek authorities when a vessel carrying 545 migrants issued a distress signal near Gavdos Island, south of Crete.
The Hellenic Coast Guard responded promptly by deploying three patrol boats, which were supported by three Frontex vessels and three nearby commercial ships. All passengers, primarily men from Bangladesh, Egypt, and Pakistan, were safely transported ashore to Crete.
The migrants were moved from the port of Agia Galini to a temporary facility in the Latzimas area, in Rethymnon, for overnight accommodation. Local authorities are setting up the area with mattresses and blankets, but concerns have been raised regarding the adequacy of the facility for short-term housing.
