On Tue, Nov 28, 2023, an aircraft hijacking incident occurred in South Sudan involving a Cessna Grand Caravan operated by Samaritan’s Purse. The event ended without injuries, and the suspect was apprehended.
The aircraft, which was transporting medical supplies from Juba to Maiwut, was commandeered mid-flight by an individual identified as Yasir Mohammed Yusuf . Yusuf, originating from the Abyei Administrative Area, concealed himself in the rear cabin prior to takeoff.
The suspect attempted to reroute the aircraft to Chad, a non-contiguous country to South Sudan. However, the pilot successfully negotiated a landing in Wau for refueling, where local security forces detained the hijacker.

A spokesperson for Samaritan’s Purse expressed gratitude for the safe resolution of the incident. This event transpired shortly after a separate aircraft operated by the same organization crashed in Unity State on Sat, Nov 25, 2023, resulting in the loss of three crew members.
