Israeli foreign minister visits Somaliland after contentious recognition of breakaway territory

The Somaliland Information Ministry noted the significance of this visit, describing it as a milestone in bilateral relations. However, Somalia's federal government maintains that Somaliland is part of Somali territory and warns that recognition undermines its sovereignty.

Israel's announcement has faced opposition from over 20 countries, primarily in the Middle East and Africa, as well as the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. Egypt's Foreign Minister has expressed concerns over the implications of Israel's actions on regional peace and security.

Previously, discussions were held involving the U.S. and Israeli officials regarding potential resettlement plans in Somaliland, which have since been abandoned. The U.S. continues to recognize Somalia's territorial integrity, which includes Somaliland.
