Kampala decked in colours of Ugandan president's party ahead of polls

Uganda is approaching its general election, with campaign materials prominently displayed in the capital, Kampala, for the current President Yoweri Museveni. The 81-year-old leader of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party has been in power since 1986 and is seeking re-election.

Despite concerns regarding political suppression, human rights issues, and corruption, President Museveni retains a loyal support base. Lydia Nansangwawo, vice-secretary of the NRM’s national mobile task force, expressed uncertainty about the opposition's vision, emphasizing the current stability and security under Museveni's leadership.

The Ugandan government has amended the constitution twice, removing both age and term limits, enabling Museveni to participate in the election. His administration is credited with stabilizing the nation, fostering economic growth, and addressing HIV/AIDS.

Public figures, such as shopkeeper Flavia Atubera, highlight the progress made during Museveni’s tenure, noting improvements in societal status and peace.

In anticipation of the election scheduled for Fri, Jan 15, 2021, authorities have detained numerous opposition supporters. The election will feature Museveni against 43-year-old Bobi Wine, a former pop star turned politician. Amnesty International has accused Ugandan security forces of conducting a campaign of repression against Wine's supporters.
