Supply Shortages Among Kenyan Fuel Retailers

Numerous fuel retailers in Kenya are experiencing supply shortages due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. Approximately 20% of the country's independent fuel dealers are affected, as reported by the Petroleum Outlets Association of Kenya.

The chairman of the association, Martin Chomba, noted that the supply constraints impact a significant portion of the market. The association represents independent retailers and transporters, serving 68% of the national market.

If the current tension continues, it is projected that a total crisis could occur, with no fuel available in most outlets within two weeks.

Kenya relies entirely on fuel supplies from the Middle East through government-facilitated agreements with Gulf producers and refiners. Despite rising global oil prices, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority has frozen petroleum product prices for 30 days as of March 14.

Fuel retailers in Kenya are urging authorities to permit sourcing from private suppliers to alleviate the shortage.

Global oil prices have increased significantly in March due to disruptions in transit through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passage for about 20% of the world's oil supply.
