On Mon, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in Kenya announced new charges against Paul Mackenzie, former leader of a religious group implicated in multiple fatal incidents. Mackenzie, already on trial for manslaughter, now faces additional charges related to 52 deaths in the village of Binzaro. These charges are subsequent to the earlier Shakahola Forest Massacre, which resulted in over 400 fatalities.

The Malindi court has authorized the formal charging of Mackenzie and his associates with offenses including radicalization, facilitation of terrorist acts, and murder. These charges are in connection to the Binzaro incident, adding to the existing allegations from the Shakahola case.

Mackenzie has been accused of inciting followers to starvation with promises of religious fulfillment. Criticism has been directed at authorities post-Shakahola, suggesting regulatory oversight might have prevented these tragedies.
