Uvira, located on the border with Burundi, had been a significant stronghold in South Kivu since the group's capture of Bukavu, the province's capital, in February.
On the night of the takeover, Uvira residents reported chaos, including the retreat of Congolese army troops and gunfire throughout the city. The unrest has resulted in significant displacement, with more than 200,000 people affected across South Kivu since Dec 2, 2025, and over 70 reported deaths.

International Agreements and Violations
The M23 assault occurred despite a US-mediated peace agreement signed recently by the presidents of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda in Washington. The agreement requires Rwanda to cease support for armed groups and work towards ending hostilities. However, the M23 rebels were not part of this agreement and are negotiating separately with the DRC.
Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi has accused Rwanda of violating the peace accord shortly after its signing.
