Uvira, situated on the border with Burundi, has emerged as a significant stronghold in South Kivu. The capture of Uvira follows M23's previous control of Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu province, in February.
On the night of the capture, Uvira residents experienced chaotic conditions with reports of Congolese army troops retreating and gunfire throughout the city.

Peace Agreement and Continued Conflict
The M23's latest military actions occur in the context of a recent peace agreement mediated by the United States. The accord, signed last week by the presidents of the DRC and Rwanda in Washington, aims to cease hostilities. However, the M23 group, currently engaged in separate negotiations with the DRC, was not included in this agreement. The accord requires Rwanda to cease support for armed groups and work towards peace.
Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi has accused Rwanda of breaching the Washington peace agreement soon after its signing.
According to local United Nations partners, the ongoing conflict has led to the displacement of more than 200,000 individuals across South Kivu since Dec 2, 2025, with over 70 fatalities reported.
