Macron urges respect for Madagascar's constitutional order amid crisis concerns

French President Emmanuel Macron has addressed the ongoing political crisis in Madagascar, expressing significant concern regarding the situation.

During an international summit, President Macron emphasized France's commitment to maintaining a strong relationship with the Malagasy people, without confirming reports of the country's president being evacuated with French assistance.

Macron highlighted the potential risks associated with a breakdown in constitutional order, noting that such an event could jeopardize both national stability and international support. He stated, “Madagascar has experienced this before, and the primary victims are often the citizens.”

Additionally, he acknowledged the proactive role of Madagascar’s youth in the situation, while cautioning against their potential exploitation by military factions or foreign interests. “We admire them,” Macron remarked, “But they must not be used.”

France continues to support the efforts by the African Union and the Southern African Development Community in their endeavors to uphold democratic institutions and restore order. Macron concluded, “France remains attentive and committed to Madagascar’s stability.”
