Madagascar: Gen Z-led protests continue despite government dissolution

On Mon, Sep 25, 2023, President Andry Rajoelina announced the dissolution of the Madagascar government on state television. This decision was made in response to ongoing protests across the country. During his address, President Rajoelina expressed condolences to the families of individuals who lost their lives during the protests and acknowledged administrative shortcomings.

President Rajoelina stated, “Your demands have been heard, and I apologize if there are members of the government who have not done the work that the people expected.” However, the dismissal of the government has not satisfied protestors, whose primary demand remains the resignation of the head of state. Protesters have expressed their determination to continue demonstrating until their demands are met.

Among the dismissed ministers, Paubert Mahatante, the Minister of Fisheries, stated via social media that he remains committed to serving the Malagasy people, irrespective of his ministerial position.

Since Thu, Sep 21, 2023, large-scale protests have erupted in response to persistent water and power shortages. These demonstrations, primarily led by younger generations, represent a significant challenge to President Rajoelina's administration.

In reaction to the protests, the government has enforced a nighttime curfew in Antananarivo since Thu, Sep 21, 2023, extending to other major cities by Fri, Sep 22, 2023. Law enforcement agencies have utilized teargas and rubber bullets to disperse crowds.

According to the United Nations, the protests have resulted in at least 22 fatalities and over 100 injuries. The Malagasy Ministry of Foreign Affairs has challenged these figures.
