Madagascar's Gen Z protesters angry at coup leader's choice of prime minister

On Monday, Colonel Michael Randrianirina appointed Herintsalama Rajaonarivelo as the Prime Minister of Madagascar. Rajaonarivelo is recognized for his significant presence in the Malagasy economic and financial sectors. Randrianirina cited Rajaonarivelo's experience and his connections with international organizations as reasons for the appointment.

Rajaonarivelo succeeds Ruphin Zafisambo, who had been appointed by former President Andry Rajoelina only two weeks prior.

Leaders from Madagascar's Gen Z protest movement have expressed disapproval over the appointment, noting that the decision was made without public consultation. The youth leaders argue that this nomination contradicts the public's demand for change and renewal following weeks of demonstrations addressing issues such as water and power shortages, which eventually led to the ousting of former President Rajoelina.

Colonel Randrianirina assumed power through a military coup last week and was inaugurated as president on Friday. In response to the appointment, Gen Z leaders have requested transparency regarding the selection process for Rajaonarivelo and have pledged to continue their mobilization efforts.

The movement leaders have stated, "We will not allow old practices to be passed off as something new. Our revolution will not be hijacked."
