Makerere University Anthem Composer Dies at 81

Grace Wilson Igaga Mutekanga, the composer of Makerere University's official anthem, died at the age of 81 after a battle with cancer.

The announcement was made by Professor Bernabas Nawangwe, vice chancellor of Makerere University in Kampala. The university, founded in 1922, is Uganda's oldest institution of higher education and remains a leading centre for academic research across East Africa.

Mutekanga's composition has been sung at university ceremonies for decades, forming an important part of the institution's identity and traditions. Makerere has trained generations of Ugandan leaders, professionals and scholars, many of whom would have performed or heard the anthem during graduation and other official events.
