The Nedbank Gravel Burn, an 800-kilometer gravel stage race spanning seven days across South Africa's Western and Eastern Cape, commenced on Sun, under challenging weather conditions in Knysna.
This event, recognized as the world's first pro-am gravel stage race, attracted 500 participants from 28 countries. Notable competitors included Olympic and world champions such as Tom Pidcock, Alistair Brownlee, Allison Jackson, and Ashleigh Moolman Pasio. The race began at Knysna's lagoon, with participants navigating through forests and mountain passes toward the Karoo plains.
Stage 1 covered 84 kilometers and included 2,050 meters of elevation gain. Local athlete Matthew Beers emerged victorious with a time of 2 hours 54 minutes 19 seconds, narrowly defeating Switzerland’s Andri Frischknecht. France’s Hugo Drechou finished in third place.
