Microsoft Unveils a New Tool to Migrate from Slack to Microsoft Teams

Product Update: Slack-to-Teams Migration Tool

Microsoft has introduced a native migration tool within the Microsoft 365 admin center to facilitate seamless transitions from Slack to Teams. This tool enables the transfer of public and private channel content, ensuring message continuity.

The migration tool is available in public preview through Targeted Release starting early December 2025, with a full rollout expected by late January 2026. General Availability is anticipated from late January to early March 2026.

The feature appears by default in the Migration and imports section of Microsoft 365. Administrators can access it without opting in, and it does not interfere with existing functionalities.

Administrators begin by exporting Slack workspace data as a ZIP file, uploading it to an Azure Blob Storage container, and generating a shared access signature (SAS) URL. This URL is then used in the migration tool to initiate the transfer. The interface allows the selection of specific Slack exports for migration.

Slack channels eligible for migration are displayed, with options to map them to Teams shared, public, or private channels. User mapping can be conducted via web UI or CSV, requiring appropriate administrative roles for consent.

The tool converts Slack data, including threaded conversations, reactions, and attachments, into a format compatible with Teams while preserving the original data. Initial support is limited to channels, with plans to expand to direct messages and other content types.

This native tool reduces dependency on third-party solutions, simplifying the migration process and maintaining conversation history for compliance and productivity. Global Administrators must provide one-time consent for the Microsoft 365 Teams Migration app, ensuring controlled access and alignment with security protocols.

Data remains in customer-controlled Azure storage until the import is complete, reducing exposure risks. Cybersecurity teams benefit from reduced manual export risks, although standard monitoring practices are recommended.
