Moroccan caftan joins UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List

The Moroccan caftan has been officially recognized by UNESCO and added to its Intangible Cultural Heritage List, highlighting the significance of Moroccan craftsmanship. This decision was made on Wed, during a meeting of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in India.

Earlier this year, Morocco submitted the caftan's candidacy for UNESCO recognition. The application emphasized the richness and development of the intangible cultural heritage associated with the caftan, as noted by Morocco's culture ministry.

The caftan, more than just a garment, represents a national symbol of identity, craftsmanship, and cultural pride in Morocco. Traditionally worn during significant social and religious events, the attire has evolved over more than eight centuries and is now celebrated by prominent fashion houses.

The Moroccan culture ministry remarked that the caftan embodies an exceptional technical and aesthetic heritage. The ministry expressed gratitude to Moroccan artisans and civil society for their ongoing support of the country's cultural legacy.

Additionally, this recognition by UNESCO aims to protect the caftan from cultural appropriation. The garment has been a point of contention between Morocco and Algeria, with disputes over its cultural origins.
