Tourism Update: Morocco's Record Influx and Expansion Plans

As the autumn season progresses and temperatures decrease, Morocco is preparing for an active tourist season following a significant increase in visitor numbers this year.

By the end of September, Morocco had welcomed 15 million tourists, marking a 14% increase compared to the same period in 2024, as reported by the tourism ministry. This growth is expected to continue as the favorable autumn weather attracts more visitors to explore Morocco's urban and natural landscapes.

Marrakech plays a crucial role in this growth, accounting for over 35% of the national tourism activity with approximately 10 million overnight stays annually. The city offers more than 1,500 traditional riads, primarily located in its historic districts, contributing significantly to the local economy by supporting craftsmen and workers.

To accommodate the increasing number of tourists, Morocco, and particularly Marrakech, is developing infrastructure to cater to new market segments seeking upscale experiences. This includes luxury hotels and fine dining establishments aimed at visitors with higher incomes.

The Ministry of Tourism recently announced a $75 million investment plan to enhance tourism in Ouarzazate, a city renowned as the gateway to the Sahara Desert. This initiative aims to bolster the city's capacity to attract and accommodate more visitors.
