Mugabe's son in custody after gardener shot at Johannesburg home

On Thu, Oct 5, 2023, the youngest son of the former Zimbabwean president, Robert Mugabe, was taken into police custody following a shooting incident at the family's residence in Johannesburg. South African police have initiated an attempted murder investigation.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, two men, aged 33 and 24, were brought in for questioning. The police have not disclosed their identities. However, media reports suggest that one of the suspects is Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, aged 29. Images have surfaced showing him in handcuffs, accompanied by police officers.

The incident occurred at a residence situated in a wealthy suburb north of Johannesburg. The victim, a gardener, was shot and is currently in critical condition. Colonel Nevhuhulwi stated that the circumstances surrounding the shooting are unclear, and investigations are ongoing to ascertain the motive.

The Mugabe family has had previous encounters with the law. The Mugabe brothers, Robert Jr and Bellarmine, are noted for their lifestyle in Johannesburg. Their mother, Grace Mugabe, has faced assault allegations in both South Africa and Zimbabwe in the past. Additionally, Robert Jr was involved in a legal case in Harare in October regarding cannabis possession, which he denies.
