New Commandant Takes Charge of NSCDC in Akwa Ibom State

Mr Bashar Hussaini has taken up his post as the new commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Akwa Ibom State.

The development was announced by the command’s spokesman, Mr Friday Ekerete, in a statement issued on Tuesday. Mr Hussaini replaces Eluyemi Eluwade, who has been redeployed to the corps’ headquarters in Abuja.

Akwa Ibom, an oil-producing state in Nigeria’s Niger Delta region, relies on the NSCDC alongside other security agencies to maintain public order, protect critical infrastructure and respond to civil emergencies. The corps is a paramilitary organisation responsible for disaster management, anti-vandalism operations and the protection of government installations.

The appointment marks the 16th change of leadership at the state command since the NSCDC established a presence there. Such rotations are routine in Nigerian federal security services to ensure fresh perspectives and prevent over-familiarity with local actors.

No further details were provided about Mr Hussaini’s immediate priorities or the precise reasons for the redeployment of his predecessor. The statement simply confirmed that the new commandant had assumed duty.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps operates under the federal Ministry of Interior. Its state commands work closely with governors and local authorities, particularly in the Niger Delta where oil infrastructure requires constant protection against theft and sabotage.

The announcement comes amid continued national efforts to strengthen coordination among security agencies in response to various threats across Nigeria’s 36 states.
