On Monday, multiple explosions occurred in Maiduguri, a city in northeastern Nigeria, resulting in numerous casualties. The incidents took place at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital entrance and two local markets, Post Office and Monday Market, as confirmed by Sirajo Abdullahi, head of operations at Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Maiduguri.
Police authorities have deployed explosive clearance teams to the affected locations. The number of casualties is still being determined as emergency teams continue to manage the situation at the hospital. No organization has claimed responsibility for these events.
Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, is currently facing a complex security crisis involving various armed groups. Boko Haram and ISIL's West Africa Province (ISWAP) have increased their attacks in the region, targeting military bases and resulting in the loss of military personnel and equipment.
The Nigerian military reported repelling attacks by suspected insurgents on the outskirts of Maiduguri early Monday. Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum attributed the recent surge in violence to ongoing military operations in the Sambisa forest, a known insurgent base.
