Last week, Russian military forces collaborated with the Nigerien armed forces to repel an attack on Niger’s main airport in Niamey, as confirmed by Moscow’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The attack, claimed by the ISIL armed group, involved 20 attackers and resulted in four Nigerien army soldiers being wounded.
The assault on the Diori Hamani International Airport occurred on the night of January 28. ISIL claimed responsibility for what they described as a “surprise and coordinated attack.” A video published by ISIL-affiliated media showed attackers armed with assault rifles and setting ablaze one aircraft.
Niger’s state television reported that at least 11 attackers were captured. Moscow has condemned the attack, likening it to a similar incident in September 2024 at Mali’s international airport. Russia's Foreign Ministry indicated that the attackers may have received external support.
Niger’s military leadership, including Chief Abdourahamane Tchiani, acknowledged the role of Russian forces in defending the airport. Tchiani expressed gratitude during a visit to the Russian military base in Niamey.
