The Rafah crossing has historically been the primary link for Palestinians in Gaza to the outside world. However, in May 2024, Israeli forces occupied the Palestinian side of the crossing, resulting in significant restrictions and a severe humanitarian crisis.
This marked the first instance in 20 years where Israeli forces directly controlled the border. They established a military presence along the Philadelphi Corridor, where they currently remain.
The first phase of a 20-point plan proposed by the US administration in October 2025 aimed to end hostilities in Gaza. It included provisions for allowing humanitarian aid into the territory and reopening the Rafah crossing in both directions.

Recent discussions about reopening the crossing in both directions were reportedly delayed until after Netanyahu's meeting with the US President. An unnamed US source indicated that an announcement regarding the opening is expected soon.
During his visit to the US, Netanyahu was commended by the US President for adhering to the peace plan. However, there have been reports of US officials expressing frustration over delays in implementing the ceasefire plan.
