The demonstrations, primarily led by young individuals, originated last week in Antananarivo due to deteriorating living conditions. Security forces have responded with tear gas and rubber bullets, enforcing a curfew from dusk to dawn. Incidents of looting have been reported in various parts of the capital.

In a televised address, President Rajoelina acknowledged public grievances and apologized for the government's shortcomings. He expressed intentions to support affected businesses and open communication channels with the youth. He recognized the impact of power and water supply issues on daily life.

Madagascar, located off the southeast coast of Africa, is one of the poorest countries in the region. As of 2022, approximately 75% of its population lived below the poverty line, according to the World Bank.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights reported casualties among protesters and bystanders, as well as deaths during looting incidents. Madagascar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs disputed these figures, citing unofficial data sources.

The protests have drawn inspiration from similar youth-led movements in countries such as Kenya, Nepal, and Morocco, with coordination largely occurring via social media platforms.
