The Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt has partially reopened, allowing a limited number of injured Palestinians to exit Gaza. On the first day of reopening, five patients were permitted to leave via the crossing, despite the substantial number of individuals awaiting medical aid.
The reopening of the Rafah crossing is part of the second phase of a United States-backed ceasefire agreement. However, the operation is subject to stringent security measures and limited capacity, affecting the number of individuals able to cross. Currently, each patient allowed to leave is accompanied by two individuals, totaling fifteen travelers in this initial group.
Coordination is managed by the World Health Organization (WHO) alongside Egyptian and Israeli authorities. Despite initial plans for 50 patients to depart daily, only the group of five was permitted on the first day.
Among those who traveled was Mohammed Abu Mostafa, who sustained an eye injury from an air attack. His mother expressed the challenges they faced due to the limited medical resources available within Gaza.

The process involves a multi-stage security procedure, with daily candidate lists for travel being subject to Israeli security screening. The European Union Border Assistance Mission monitors the crossing, ensuring identity verification and compliance with procedures.
While additional patients were transferred to Israel via the Kerem Abu Salem crossing, the demand for medical evacuations continues to outpace the availability of crossing permissions.
