At least two individuals were killed when police in Kenya discharged firearms to disperse crowds of mourners who had gathered to view the body of opposition leader Raila Odinga. The incident occurred at a football stadium in Nairobi, where the viewing was scheduled to take place.

The head of police operations, Adamson Bungei, confirmed the shooting at the 60,000-capacity stadium. Local media later reported that the death toll had increased to four, with numerous injuries. Security forces used tear gas to disperse the crowd, resulting in the stadium being vacated.

Supporters of Odinga began gathering early in Nairobi, with tensions escalating after some individuals breached a gate at the arena. This led to security forces responding with shots and tear gas, causing a stampede near the stadium gates. The incident also resulted in a two-hour suspension of operations at Nairobi's international airport.

President William Ruto visited the stadium with Odinga’s family to pay respects. The public viewing eventually took place outside the stadium gates. Additional gatherings occurred in Bondo, Odinga's ancestral home, where he is scheduled to be buried.

Raila Odinga, a prominent figure in African politics, passed away at the age of 80 during a medical trip to India. Known for his efforts toward democratic reform, Odinga ran five presidential campaigns. A public holiday has been declared on Friday, with a state funeral service planned at another stadium in Nairobi, followed by a public viewing in Kisumu on Saturday.
