The Arab League, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and African Union (AU) have expressed opposition to Israel's formal recognition of the northern Somali region of Somaliland as an independent state.

Somaliland, located in the Horn of Africa, declared independence from Somalia in 1991 and has sought international recognition since. Israel announced on Fri, Dec 26, 2025, that it considers Somaliland an "independent and sovereign state," becoming the first country to do so.

Somalia criticized Israel's decision, labeling it a "deliberate attack" on its sovereignty that could destabilize regional peace. The AU issued a statement rejecting Israel's move, warning it could set a "dangerous precedent" affecting peace and stability across Africa. AU Commission Chair Mahmoud Ali Youssouf reiterated that Somaliland remains part of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

Statements from International Organizations

Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit described Israel's action as a "clear violation of international law" and an infringement on the sovereignty of states. The GCC called it a "grave violation" that could undermine stability in the Horn of Africa.

The European Union emphasized respect for Somalia's territorial integrity and called for dialogue between Somalia and Somaliland. Several countries, including Somalia, Egypt, Turkiye, and Djibouti, condemned Israel's recognition of Somaliland.

Somalia has demanded that Israel retract its recognition of Somaliland, condemning it as an act of "aggression." Meanwhile, Somaliland's leader, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, described Israel's decision as a "historic moment" and a step towards a "strategic partnership."

Al-Shabab, an al-Qaeda-linked group in Somalia, declared its intent to oppose any Israeli presence in Somaliland.
