The former President, Andry Rajoelina, was impeached by lawmakers for desertion of duty after leaving the country. Despite the impeachment, Rajoelina, currently in exile, has condemned the military's actions and disputed reports of his resignation.
Rajoelina's departure was prompted by nationwide protests led by the "Gen Z Madagascar" youth movement. The protests began in response to ongoing water and power shortages and escalated into demands for systemic change.
