The South African government had previously received distress calls from 17 citizens trapped in the conflict zone of Ukraine's Donbas region. Four individuals have already returned to South Africa, with the remaining 11 expected to follow shortly.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed gratitude to Russian President Vladimir Putin for facilitating the repatriation process. The return of these individuals was made possible through diplomatic negotiations, following commitments made by President Putin earlier this month.
The South African government is conducting an investigation into the recruitment process of these individuals, who were allegedly misled into joining mercenary forces with promises of lucrative employment. South African law prohibits its citizens from participating in foreign military operations without official authorization.

Reports indicate that similar recruitment schemes have affected individuals from other African countries, including Kenya and Zimbabwe. Kenya's National Intelligence Service has identified that over 1,000 Kenyans have been recruited to fight in the ongoing conflict.
South Africa continues to maintain a neutral stance on the conflict in Ukraine while preserving diplomatic relations with Russia, as both countries are members of the BRICS coalition, which also includes Brazil, India, and China.
