The attack occurred at the Adikong market near the Sudan-Chad border, igniting fuel reserves and causing widespread destruction on Thursday.
Doctors Without Borders (MSF) reported treating over 20 injured individuals, including seven children, at a hospital in Adre. This marks the second drone attack in the area within a month.
Drones have become a pivotal weapon in the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, ongoing since April 2023. UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk expressed concern over the intensified use of drones, which have resulted in over 200 deaths in the Kordofan region and White Nile state since early March.

In West Kordofan, 152 civilians were killed in an SAF attack on March 4, including 50 casualties from simultaneous strikes on a market and hospital in al-Muglad. Subsequent attacks in Abu Zabad and Wad Banda resulted in at least 40 more deaths, and a truck attack in al-Sunut on March 10 killed 50 individuals.
The RSF's drone strikes on a school and health center in White Nile state's Shukeiri village killed 17 people, including students and teachers.
The SAF has reportedly acquired Iranian-made Mohajer-6 combat UAVs and other military support from Turkey and Russia. Meanwhile, the RSF relies on a supply network reportedly facilitated by routes through Chad, with alleged support from the United Arab Emirates, which has been denied by Abu Dhabi.
Since April 2023, over 1,000 drone attacks have been documented, with 198 occurring in the first two months of 2026 alone. These attacks resulted in 478 civilian deaths. Sudan accounted for more than half of all drone attacks in Africa in 2024.
The ongoing conflict has created a significant humanitarian crisis, with 33.7 million people requiring aid and over 12 million displaced, according to the United Nations.
