On Mon, Jan 15, 2026, the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) conducted a drone attack on a Sudanese army base in the southeastern city of Sinja, resulting in 27 fatalities. The attack occurred as the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) announced their return to the capital, Khartoum, after relocating operations to Port Sudan three years prior.
The RSF and SAF have been engaged in a civil war since April 2023, with Khartoum being a primary area of contention. The recent drone attack targeted leaders of the government forces, security teams, and civilians. Reports indicate 13 injuries, though estimates vary, with some sources citing up to 73 wounded.
Qamar al-Din Fadl al-Mawla, the governor of Sudan’s White Nile state, was present in Sinja during the attack. Although he survived, two of his colleagues were killed. Sinja is strategically located along a key route to Khartoum and houses the SAF’s 17th Infantry Division, which was the apparent target.
Salah Adam Abdullah, spokesperson for the Sennar state government, stated that the SAF repelled the drone attack using anti-aircraft defenses, though the shelling resulted in civilian casualties. Life in Sinja has reportedly returned to normal following the incident.
