A drone attack by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on a central Sudanese city led to the deaths of at least three individuals and injured nine others. This attack occurred in the Tayba neighborhood of el-Obeid, located near a police station.

The RSF's strategy has increasingly involved the use of air power, moving its operations from Darfur to the Kordofan region. This area is crucial due to its oil infrastructure, which is a significant source of revenue for both Sudan and South Sudan. The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have also been active, targeting RSF positions in South Kordofan and engaging in artillery exchanges in the region.

The conflict has forced tens of thousands of residents to flee their homes, exacerbating what aid organizations describe as a severe humanitarian crisis. The three Kordofan states have been central to recent clashes, contributing to the displacement of populations and the worsening of living conditions.

The United Nations' World Food Programme (WFP) has expressed concerns about critical funding shortages, which may necessitate reducing food rations by up to 70% starting in January. Ross Smith, the WFP's emergency preparedness director, highlighted the potential impact on communities already facing severe hunger and those at risk of famine. The WFP has reported that 20 million Sudanese are experiencing malnutrition, with six million in conditions akin to famine.

The ongoing conflict between the army and the RSF has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and displaced nearly 13 million people since April 2023.
