The Sudan Doctors Network has reported that the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) allegedly committed sexual assaults against at least 19 women fleeing the city of el-Fasher in Darfur. Among the victims were two pregnant women. These incidents were documented in the town of al-Dabba in Northern State.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been experiencing a civil war involving the Sudanese army and the RSF. This conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of over 12 million individuals, as reported by the United Nations. Approximately 30 million people are currently in need of humanitarian assistance.
The RSF captured el-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, in October after an extended campaign. This area was the last stronghold of the Sudanese army in the region.
Amnesty International has accused the RSF of committing war crimes, leading the UN Human Rights Council to initiate an investigation into the alleged abuses in el-Fasher. The region has been described as a "crime scene" by international officials.
The Sudan Doctors Network claims that incidents of sexual violence by RSF fighters may be more extensive than reported, due to social stigma preventing victims from coming forward. The network has also documented additional cases of sexual assault in other areas.
