UN Warns of Potential Atrocities in Sudan's Kordofan Region
The United Nations has issued a warning regarding the potential for mass atrocities in the Kordofan region of Sudan, coinciding with ongoing clashes between rival armed forces. The situation poses a significant humanitarian threat.
UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk highlighted the repetition of historical violence in Kordofan, following the recent fall of el-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state.
Since late October, at least 269 civilian casualties have been documented due to aerial bombardment, artillery fire, and summary executions. The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have taken control of Bara in North Kordofan state.
Communication blackouts have hindered the assessment of the full impact, but reports indicate instances of revenge attacks, arbitrary detentions, sexual violence, and the forced recruitment of children.
Recently, the RSF claimed control over the city of Babnusa in West Kordofan, although the Sudanese army has refuted this claim.

Kordofan's strategic location makes it a critical territory for both opposing sides. The region acts as a corridor linking RSF-controlled Darfur with government-held territories.
Control over cities like El Obeid could provide the RSF a direct route to the capital, Khartoum. The UN previously issued warnings regarding potential atrocities in el-Fasher, which were largely ignored, resulting in mass killings.
Amnesty International has called for war crimes investigations, while the European Union has imposed sanctions on RSF deputy leader Abdelrahim Dagalo.
Volker Turk has urged influential countries to cease arms supplies to the conflicting parties and advocate for an immediate ceasefire to prevent further human rights violations.
