A light aircraft crash in Kenya's coastal region of Kwale has resulted in the deaths of 11 individuals, primarily foreign tourists, en route to the Maasai Mara National Reserve.

Mombasa Air Safari reported on Tuesday that the passengers included eight individuals from Hungary and two from Germany, alongside a Kenyan pilot who also perished in the crash.

No survivors were reported, as confirmed by Mombasa Air Safari. The incident occurred amidst heavy rainfall in the coastal region of Kenya in the morning.

The Civil Aviation Authority stated that the accident took place near Kwale, close to the Indian Ocean coast, at approximately 8:30 am (05:30 GMT). According to a regional police commander, all passengers were tourists.

Authorities noted that the aircraft crashed in a hilly and forested area around 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Diani airstrip. The site was marked by charred wreckage as the aircraft burst into flames. Witnesses reported hearing a loud noise before discovering the tragic scene.

Investigative bodies are examining the cause of the crash, as indicated by Kwale County Commissioner Stephen Orinde.

The Maasai Mara National Reserve, situated to the west of Kenya's coastline, is approximately a two-hour direct flight from Diani, a coastal town renowned for its beaches. The reserve is noted for attracting numerous tourists, particularly during the annual wildebeest migration from Tanzania's Serengeti.

A safety oversight audit conducted in 2018 by the International Civil Aviation Organization revealed that Kenya's accident investigation capabilities fell below the global average.
