A legal proceeding has commenced involving Moussa Mara, the former Prime Minister of Mali, currently detained by the nation's military authorities. The trial began at Mali's national cybercrime court in Bamako on Mon, Sep 29, 2025. No verdict has been reached at this stage.
According to Mountaga Tall, Mara's legal representative, the trial comprises two segments: a request for Mara's provisional release and the primary case proceedings. The hearings are open to the public.
The case originated from an online post by Mara on Jul 4, 2025, expressing "unwavering solidarity with prisoners of conscience" and naming several political detainees he visited. This post led to charges from the military authorities, including undermining state credibility, opposing legitimate authority, inciting public disorder, and disseminating false information.
Mali is currently under the leadership of General Assimi Goita, who assumed the role of transitional president in June 2021 following two coups. In July 2025, the military-appointed parliament conferred a renewable five-year presidential term on Goita, and elections have been postponed indefinitely. Political party activities were dissolved in May 2025, further extending military rule.

Recently, these countries announced their withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC) and have reduced defense cooperation with Western countries, opting to strengthen ties with Russia.
