Niger's government officially summoned the European Union's chargé d'affaires in Niamey on Thu, Oct 12, 2023. This action was in response to a European Parliament resolution that calls for the "immediate" release of detained former President Mohamed Bazoum.
The foreign ministry of Niger delivered a protest letter to EU representative Nicoletta Avella, condemning what it considers "EU interference in Niger's internal affairs." The authorities criticized a "paternalistic and condescending attitude" and emphasized their refusal to accept external directives.
The European Parliament passed a non-binding resolution with 524 votes in favor, demanding Bazoum's release. Bazoum has been detained with his wife since a coup in July 2023, with his presidential term set to expire on Apr 2, 2024.
