Nigeria Bears Highest Global Sickle Cell Burden
The country sees around 150,000 children born each year with the genetic blood disorder, according to the vice-chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University.

Nigeria has the highest burden of sickle cell disease worldwide, with an estimated 150,000 children born annually with the condition, a senior academic has said.
Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi, vice-chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University, made the remarks during a meeting of the Patient-Centred Sickle Cell Disease Management in Sub-Saharan Africa Consortium. The gathering, organised under the Centre for Excellence in Sickle Cell Disease Research and Training (CESRTA), took place in April in Abuja.
Sickle cell disease is an inherited disorder that affects haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. In Nigeria, the high prevalence stems from the fact that a significant proportion of the population carries the sickle cell trait, which is particularly common in regions where malaria has historically been endemic.
The condition can cause severe pain, infections, anaemia and organ damage. Without proper management, many children do not survive into adulthood. Health authorities have long identified it as a major public health challenge across sub-Saharan Africa.

The PACTS Consortium brings together researchers and clinicians aiming to improve patient-centred approaches to treatment. Its April meeting focused on advancing management strategies tailored to the realities of healthcare systems in the region.
Nigeria's large population means the absolute number of affected individuals exceeds that of any other country. Experts have repeatedly called for expanded newborn screening, wider access to preventive antibiotics, hydroxyurea therapy and better pain management protocols.
Despite progress in awareness campaigns, many families still face stigma and limited access to specialised care, particularly outside major urban centres. The vice-chancellor's comments underscore the scale of the task facing Nigerian health planners and international partners working to reduce the disease's impact.
Research initiatives such as CESRTA seek to generate local data and train specialists who can address both the clinical and social dimensions of living with sickle cell disease in Nigeria and neighbouring countries.
