In Kaduna state, Nigeria, over 150 worshippers were abducted from churches on Sun, Jun 23, 2023. Masked gunmen attacked three churches during services in Kurmin Wali, seizing congregants and fleeing into nearby forests. The abductors have demanded a ransom of 17 motorcycles from the families of the hostages.

The Nigerian government announced on Fri, Jun 28, 2023, that the United States has pledged to deliver military equipment purchased by Nigeria over the last five years. The equipment will include drones, helicopters, tactical platforms, spare parts, and support systems.

Information Minister Ibrahim Idris affirmed the effective partnership between the two nations following a meeting between U.S. officials and Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, in Abuja.

This arms pledge represents progress in overcoming earlier diplomatic tensions due to religious freedom concerns. The meeting was the third of its kind since Nov 2022, indicating a shift towards enhanced security cooperation.

Previously, on Dec 25, 2022, U.S. forces conducted airstrikes in Sokoto state, targeting Islamic State affiliates, which marked a pivotal moment in U.S.-Nigeria relations.
