On Sat, Oct 14, 2023, at least 46 individuals were killed in an attack by armed assailants in three villages within the Borgu local government area of Niger State, Nigeria. The attack targeted the villages of Konkoso, Tungar Makeri, and Pissa, resulting in significant casualties and the destruction of properties.
The most severe impact was reported in Konkoso, where 38 people were either shot dead or had their throats slit. Additional casualties were reported in Tungar Makeri, with six confirmed fatalities. The assailants also attacked Pissa, where they set a police station on fire and killed one individual.
Several houses were set ablaze, and an undetermined number of people were abducted. Many residents are reported missing. The border region between Kwara and Niger states, particularly the Kainji Forest area, is known for harboring bandits and jihadists.
Nigeria faces multiple security challenges, including a long-standing jihadist insurgency in the northeast, conflicts between farmers and herders in the north-central region, separatist violence in the southeast, and kidnappings for ransom in the northwest. Armed groups referred to as "bandits" frequently conduct raids, causing further instability.
