Nigerian Christian leader urges unity during Muslim festival
The head of the Christian Association of Nigeria used the occasion of Eid-el-Kabir to call on citizens to prioritise national cohesion and shared values of sacrifice and obedience.
Archbishop Daniel Okoh, president of the Christian Association of Nigeria, appealed for unity and peace among all citizens as the country marked Eid-el-Kabir.
In a statement released on the day of the festival, Okoh reminded Nigerians that the occasion, observed by Muslims, carried lessons that should resonate across religious lines. He emphasised the need for collective sacrifice, obedience to higher principles, and strengthened faith as foundations for a more stable nation.
Nigeria is a multi-religious society in which Christians and Muslims each form large communities, often living side by side in the same towns and cities. Periodic tensions between the two faiths have historically required leaders from both sides to intervene publicly to calm fears and discourage division.
The Christian Association of Nigeria, commonly known by its acronym CAN, functions as an umbrella body representing a wide spectrum of Christian denominations. Its president customarily issues messages on major national and religious occasions to promote harmony.
