Nigeria Court Adds Terrorism Charges Against Former Justice Minister

A federal high court in Abuja has added terrorism charges to the existing allegations against former justice minister, Abubakar Malami. Malami served as attorney general and justice minister from 2015 to 2023.

The charges include accusations of laundering approximately $6 million, involving his wife and son. The court charged Malami with knowingly abetting terrorism financing by refusing to prosecute individuals suspected of supporting insurgents. Additionally, Malami and his son are charged with intent to commit acts of terrorism by possessing an unlicensed pistol and ammunition at their residence.

Both Malami and his son have pleaded not guilty to the charges. Malami was previously granted bail in the money laundering case but was rearrested shortly after his release.

This case is part of ongoing legal actions involving officials from former President Muhammadu Buhari's administration. Nigeria has been facing an insurgency for over a decade, resulting in more than 40,000 deaths and displacing nearly two million individuals.
