Nigerian electoral officials observe South Korean local polls

A senior delegation from Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission has travelled to South Korea to observe the conduct of local government elections.

The chairman of the commission, accompanied by other senior officials, is in Seoul for the exercise. The visit forms part of preparations for Nigeria's next general elections, due to take place in 2027.

Nigeria operates a federal system in which local government elections are typically conducted by state electoral bodies rather than the national commission. The 2027 polls will cover the presidency, the national parliament and many state governorships and assemblies.

South Korea, by contrast, holds regular local elections that include mayors, governors and municipal councillors. The Nigerian team is examining logistical arrangements, voter registration, polling procedures and the use of technology in a highly urbanised democracy.

The commission has in recent years sought to strengthen its processes following criticism of past national elections. International observation and study tours form one element of its efforts to improve credibility and efficiency.

According to Vanguard Nigeria, the delegation is currently in the South Korean capital. No further details of the length of the visit or specific aspects under review have been made public.

Nigeria's electoral body is constitutionally independent and responsible for registering voters, delimiting constituencies and conducting federal and state elections across Africa's most populous nation. Its decisions often attract intense political scrutiny.

The 2027 general elections will mark another major test for democratic institutions in a country where turnout has declined in recent cycles and where logistical challenges, such as distribution of voting materials, have historically drawn comment from observers.
