Nigerian rights group urges Imo governor to halt herder violence
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria has pressed Imo State Governor Senator Hope Uzodimma to take immediate steps against repeated attacks on local residents by armed Fulani herders.
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria has called on the governor of Imo State to act urgently to end violence attributed to armed Fulani herders that has claimed the lives of citizens in the south-eastern state.
The group described the attacks as sustained killings that have targeted Imo residents over an extended period. It urged the state government to deploy measures that would bring the violence to an immediate halt.
Imo lies in Nigeria’s south-east geopolitical zone, an area traditionally dominated by small-scale farming communities and distinct in ethnicity and religion from the predominantly Muslim herding populations of the far north. Clashes between roaming herders and sedentary farmers have occurred for years across several states, often over access to land and water, but the violence has sometimes taken on more organised and lethal forms.
The rights association’s statement, issued in August 2025, reflects ongoing concern among civil society organisations about the ability of state authorities to protect rural populations.
